Can you design our banner?
Yes, I offer a full design service. Producing a full colour scale painting of the final banner, based on your lodge logo or other requirements. This can be used to gain any necessary permission for your banner.
When can you deliver?
When you make an enquiry I will give you an estimated time scale for your banner; however I only confirm a delivery date when I have received a 20% deposit of the final cost of the commission.
How long does it take to make a banner?
This varies dependent on the complexity of the design; I like to allow a two month slot. All work is completed by me in my Exmoor studio, I do not outsource. I try to buy all my materials from independent British suppliers.
How is the banner made?
I use two main techniques: Machine appliqué - this where elements of the design are cut out of silk and then pieced together with stitch, rather like marquetry. Machine embroidery – decorative and free motion stitching is used to enhance the design.
Will it be robust?
My banners are made in at least four layers, like a textile sandwich. Two of silk, a calico lining and a heavyweight Vilene. A soft protective case is supplied.
How will it hang?
The banner will have a castellated top, tabs, where the pole is threaded through. Usually a space is left in the middle to allow access to fixings for hanging.
How long have you been making banners?
For nearly thirty years, I made my first one after graduating with an honours degree in embroidery from Manchester University.
Can we visit you?
Of course, a banner is a big financial investment and I welcome the opportunity to meet with you, show you fabrics etc. and discuss your requirements.
